Tented Camp – Central Serengeti – Luxury
Date of Stay: June, 2020 , 3 nights
Kubu Kubu is a luxury tented camp right in the heart of the Serengeti. A special treat is definitely the outdoor shower – facing the fantastic view. There is nothing quite like washing off the dust from a game drive – while watching the sunset over the savannah.
Run by a friendly team, which is well-trained in Covid-19 security measures – this camp offers a memorable way of exploring the Serengeti. The tents are spacious, with a huge bed, enough storage room to put your things, and a balcony with comfortable chairs. The tents are raised on stilts – and with the walls being canvas – you can really hear/feel the Serengeti around. We were lucky enough to fall asleep 3 nights in a row while listening to lion calls.
If you want to be critical you could say that maybe the tents are a little bit too close together – we were the only ones staying at the camp at the time, so we had no issues. If occupancy is up – you might be able to see your neighbours from your private balcony if you strain your neck – this would not be an issue for most people though.
I liked our stay here so much that within a week of returning home from our stay – I started planning my second visit.
The camp has an excellent location – right on the edge of Seronera. The camp is located on a hill – so you get to enjoy an amazing view. At night you will see a few lights from camps in the far distance – but overall it is just pure wilderness in front of you. The location is just outside the busiest part of Seronera – but close by enough to be right in the heart of the action without a long drive.
We enjoyed a wide range of different dishes during our stay. The kitchen was very happy to cater to our request of having a packed breakfast. We like to head out at/before first light. The packed breakfast made this possible. The kitchen team served us an excellent lunch and dinner at the camp. Besides amazing salads and vegetable dishes, we were served a wide range of proteins: From fish to chicken to lamb to beef. As so often it is the case in Tanzania: The soups were the star of the show! If you want to skip a course, skip dessert because youdo not want say no to the soup.
We stayed here on the basis of a special resident offer – right after Corona. We got a ‘“to good to be true” offer, which I doubt will be available in the future. So I will base my opinion on the normal tourist price in high season – which is around $300/$350 per person full board, excluding park fees.
The pricing puts this camp right in the lower end of the luxury camps range. Kubu Kubu certainly delivers here. I personally love the style of the tents – Simple, lots of wood and natural fabrics. Which I prefer over the lavish “shiny-luxury” look of some of the other camps in the same price range. The outdoor shower – is a big plus – and makes for a memorable addition to your stay. This camp fully delivers value for money.
